Newquay's natural attractions - fantastic coastline, excellent quality bathing waters, clean sandy beaches, picturesque gardens and parks, breathtaking coastal and inland walking trails to name a few, are assets that we are rightly proud of. The challenge for all of us is to effectively and sustainably manage our environment for the enjoyment of all our visitors and local communities. And the beauty of conservation is that there is always something that we as individuals can do. We can make a difference and here are a few ideas:
1. Cycle - through wooded valleys, lakes and coastal lanes, with perfect picnic stops seemingly at every turn. Fresh air, sea views and the promise of a cream tea at the end of the day. Go on, you deserve it! Check out our cycle page in the ‘Do Newquay' section for downloadable local cycle routes and bike hire shops.
2. Park that car and walk - with miles and of miles of walking trails and the famed South West Coast path literally on the doorstep, Newquay invites you to dust off those walking boots, grab a pack up and your camera and get walking! Check out Do Newquay and our walking page for information on local walking trails or check out the Newquay Discovery Trail map here.
3. Use public transport - Newquay is well connected to the rest of Cornwall's historic towns, beaches and attractions. Did you know for example the inspirational Eden Project, National Maritime Museum at Falmouth, the historic fishing town of St Ives, Cornwall's capital city Truro and food lovers Padstow are all under an hour's bus ride away? We have all the relevant bus times and useful downloads in the Travel Newquay section.
4. Shop local - stocking up for your holiday? Cornwall has built a fantastic reputation for its local produce and food. So rather than your local supermarket why not sample some of the Cornish fayre on offer in and around Newquay? You'll find a thriving farmer's market scene, local food outlets and food and drink festivals. See our Eat Newquay section for more information. Also check out the Newquay First scheme aimed at promoting local businesses.
5. Find the leaf - look out for businesses adopting the Green Tourism Business Scheme policies on conservation and better environmental business practices. We've listed the Newquay GTBS award winners on the right hand side of this page.
6. Pick up your litter - adopt the phrase ‘leave nothing but footprints'. Take litter home with you and recycle wherever you can. There are a number of local beachcleaning events organised by local groups as well as the Marine Conservation Society so pop into the Tourist Office for further details when in Newquay.
7. Support local initiatives - there are numerous local events in which you can participate from beachcleaning to hedgerow clearance, butterfly monitoring to bat walks. Don't be shy, have a try!
