Why not escape terra firma and seek out a new experience? Grab a fishing rod and try your hand at landing the next ‘jaws' or, for a completely different perspective, don a wetsuit and dive beneath the waves to glimpse an age old shipwreck or reef teeming with plant and animal life. If so, you may want to head to the harbour, one of Newquay's best kept secrets and the hub of all maritime activity where a plethora of boats are waiting to take you out!
I'd like to dive, what can I expect to see?
A fantastic amount actually, since the waters can offer superb visibility. Towan Head is a popular shore dive where you can expect to find wrasse, pollack, congor eel, squat lobster, sea slugs and anenomes. Head out on a boat and there are literally hundreds of fantastic wreck or reef sites at various depths and dependant on your experience. Wrecks such as the Syracusa 1 mile off Towan Head in around 33 meters depth, the Shell wreck, HMS Obdam and HMS Vesuvius are incredible wreck sites or if its reef you're after then check out Medusa Rock, a beautiful reef system with sea fans, jewel anenomes and even a small wreck on it.
What about fishing, where can I do that?
Quite simply, anywhere you like! There are hundreds of excellent shore fishing locations around Newquay, whether that be from a beach, rock or headland. Alternatively there are various day and half-day fishing excursions available from several operators down at the harbour. Some of the fish you might catch are Pollack, Ling, Conger Eel, Squid, Mackerel, Gurnard, Wrasse or even Dogfish. Shark fishing trips, whereby operators run a tag and release programme are also available. There are also great course fishing options such as Porth Reservoir, a mature fishery and bird sanctuary, suitable for competitive anglers and families alike.
