Paddlesurfing
Description:
How to paddlesurf
Stand up paddle surfing has been around for a long time and can be traced back to the very early days of Polynesia. It's most recent history dates back to the 1940's when surf instructors on Waikiki beach used to stand up and paddle out to the break using a one bladed paddle which allowed them better visibility over their group of surfers.
As time moved on and board designs and fashions changed, the paddle was all but lost until legendary Hawaiian big wave surfers such as Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama took up its cause around 10 years ago. They found that stand up paddle surfing allowed them to keep in shape for the bigger days of tow surfing as well as adding a new dimension to their skills.
Modern technologies have allowed the boards to come down a lot in weight and modern understanding of board design has allowed the large boards to be manouvered easily on the waves. Using a paddle means you can get around to different parts of the break quicker, explore the coast line and is just another way of propelling yourself through the water.
You may see paddlesurfers at Towan, Watergate Bay and Tolcarne beaches in particular, check out the surf schools page for more info. So while in Newquay why not give it a go?
