We want you to have a fantastic holiday in Newquay. But remember, anyone can get sunburnt. As the sun can be strong during the summer months here are a few helpful tips:
1. Keep your hat on! Your head is particularly sensitive to sunstroke even if the rest of you is covered up.
2. Wear a shirt or if on the beach, wear sun protective wetsuits. These are the complete cover up option with a ultra-violet protection factor (UPF) of 50+.
3. Remember to change clothing after playing in water, as wet clothing can lose up to half of its UV protection.
4. Put lots of sunscreen on, first of all ½ hr before going outside. Use a high factor and repeat application at least every 1-2 hrs
5. Protect you eyes, wear sunglasses. Look for the CE mark, this shows that the sunglasses meet the European safety standard.
6. Don’t get thirsty and dehydrated, drink lots of water!
6. Head for the shade between 11am and 2pm on very sunny days!
The Met Office uses the Solar UV index to give people an idea of how quickly they might get burnt:
1-2 All skin types are at low risk and it's safe to be outside
3-4 Low risk for most skin types, but those with fair or sensitive skin that burns easily should use added protection.
5-6 All skin types need protection, but black skin is less at risk. Avoid the midday sun.
7+ Everyone should cover up, use protection and seek shade/stay out of the sun where possible.
