Essential surf terms

10 terms you must know...

Barrel - where the wave resembles a tube when it is breaking. The iconic surf magazine shot!  

Carve - one of the classic surfing manoeuvres, in essence turning on a wave

Cutback- changing your direction when on a wave

Drop-in - the big no-no in surfing. This is when a surfer catches a wave in which someone else is already on it. It can be dangerous and is not tolerated! Remember, the person closest to the breaking part of the wave has priority

Duck dive - pressing down on the nose of the board so as to dive under an oncoming wave when paddling out.

Line Up - the place just outside the breaking waves where surfers wait for the next set of waves to appear

Offshore - where the wind at a surf break is blowing off the shore. Makes for good surfing conditions.

Onshore - where the wind is blowing towards the land. Tends to spoil the waves.

Rip - A strong current heading out to sea. Can be dangerous for surfers and swimmers alike

Wipe-out - falling of your board which will happen all the time!
