Fantastic new membership for Newquay! BECOME A MEMBER HERE!

A new annual membership for Newquay businesses brings together national and international internet marketing of the town and first rate visitor services through the newly re-opened and revamped Newquay Tourist Information Centre (TIC).  

There are different levels of membership depending on the type and size of business.  Businesses will pay just one membership fee and receive excellent marketing exposure through visitnewquay.org as well as the services of Newquay Tourist Information Centre. 

There are opportunities to take this further with banner adverts on the website, being part of travel journalist visits to the town and sponsorship of Tourism Newquay activities throughout the year. Membership to Tourism Newquay also gives businesses a 25% discount on VisitCornwall's annual membership

Membership form for cafes, restaurants, attractions, surf schools will follow very shortly.

No ID, NO NEWQUAY 
From 1 December 2009, only two forms of ID will be accepted in licensed premises in Newquay. If you are aged between 18 and 21 (or 25 in some premises), or look under 21, you will need to provide either a passport or driving license as ID to prove your age. MINOR DISRUPTION IN NEWQUAY!
Tiger 24 with Evolution Surf Development in association with Wavelength surf Magazine is causing a MINOR DISRUPTION, in the UK's premier surf resort Newquay on the 7th and 8th of November. Minor Disruption, the first ever junior mobile and non knock out surf tournament for 14 and under and 16 and under divisions is giving prizes to develop their career, not just cash or cups. Contest directors have the options of Watergate bay, Tolcarne or Towan beach to pick the perfect conditions for the competitors and the whole contest is being streamed live for the first time for this age group on the internet.

NEWQUAY ZOO SETS GREEN EXAMPLE
 
Staff at the Newquay Zoo are green with pride after successfully getting a top environmental standard renewed. Newquay Zoo has retained their ISO14001 accreditations after recent external audits. ISO14001 is an international standard awarded to bodies demonstrating committment to environmental improvement. They are among just a handful of zoos worldwide to hold the standard. 
 
Environmental Officer Ruth Grant said "this really is a fantastic achievement and could not have been successfully implemented without the commitment of all the staff. Under our environmental management system every impact of the running of the business is monitored, recorded and improved accordingly."

2009 BOARDMASTERS FESTIVAL HAILED BEST EVER!

PAUL WELLER COMES TO TOWN!

Staff and guests at the Hotel Victoria in Newquay got a surprise this week when Paul Weller checked in for the night with his band. The rock star was in Cornwall to perform at the Eden Project on July 10th. In true rock style fashion Paul arrived in a tour bus and stayed in one of the hotel's luxury suites. Paul is famous for his time as lead singer in the band The Jam who exploded onto the punk scene in 1977. The Jam produced six studio albums and had four number 1 hit singles.

NEWQUAY FIRST INITIATIVE LAUNCHED

A fantastic new loyalty card scheme which will give fantastic offers and discounts to shoppers in Newquay has been launched. Utilising European monies the project will also offer support and training to participating businesses. A newly refurbished Tourism Information Centre for Newquay opened on Good Friday. www.visitnewquay.org HAS BEEN VOTED THE BEST website in the South West as judged by the Media Innovation Awards, which celebrates online creative excellence in the region. The official website for Newquay, which has only been live for 3 months, beat off 150 entrants to win the prestigious award

CHASING DREAMS OUT NOW!

A novel partly set in Newquay, as well as Thailand and Australia has just been launched. The fictional book featuring Matt who dreams of escaping on a year adventure, is written by Aaron Jennings. Check out more info here.

NEWQUAY FIRST FOR NEWQUAY BUSINESSES!

NEWQUAY FIRST will from this season onwards, be an important Newquay business initiative administered by Newquay For Excellence in partnership with Tourism Newquay, NCCT and Restormel Borough Council. Newquay First will have two key elements:

1. The distribution to all Newquay residences of a Newquay First Loyalty Card to encourage residents and holidaymakers alike to put NEWQUAY FIRST and go local ie shop in Newquay. 

2. To offer all Newquay businesses, FREE and relevant business courses to look to encourage the upskilling of employees

Rip Curl Flagship Store to Reopen

Rip Curl have announced it is to reopen its Newquay store and it will become one of the companies "flagship European stores". James Hendy, UK marketing director for Rip Curl, said the new store would be a major boost to the local economy.

"We have started interviewing now and hope to have the store open for Easter."

Prams and Pushchairs offer at Newquay Zoo

For just £4.45 for one adult and one child under 3 years old plus a free cup of tea or coffee every Monday throughout the Winter. This is a great opportunity to meet up with friends or family and take a stroll around the zoo, pop into the Wildlife at Night exhibit to see the Kinkajous, Bats and Anteater or maybe pop up to the penguin enclosure and count the penguins.

Newquay Cornwall Airport Reopens

The airport, which transferred from MoD ownership to Cornwall County Council on 1 December, re-opened on 20th December 2008.

Cornwall County Council Executive Member for the Economy Andrew Mitchell said "We are obviously delighted that we have achieved certification and designation from the Civil Aviation Authority and are now able to reopen the aerodrome to commercial flights. Having worked closely with the CAA over the past few weeks I would like to thank them for all of their assistance. Cornwall now has an airport to be proud of." AFRICA and the PHILIPPINES come to Newquay Zoo!

2 fantastic new exhibits will be unveiled at the award winning Newquay Zoo in 2009. The African Savanna exhibit with three acres of grassland, will house stunning Wildebeest, entertaining Ostriches, fun tusky Warthogs, beautiful and elegant Zebra, Waterbuck and Nyala Antelope. Public viewing will be from a raised board-walk and provide some covered areas and information points with a restaurant to follow shortly afterwards. The new Philippines exhibit will house some very unusual and rare species such as the Visayan Warty Pig, Fishing Cat and Philippine Spotted Deer.

Newquay Businesses Top Cornwall Tourism Awards

The Bedruthan Steps Hotel took three awards at the Cornwall Tourism awards held at the Headland Hotel late October 2008. It won gold in ‘Sustainable Tourism Business of the Year', gold for ‘Cornwall's Large Hotel of the Year' and silver for ‘Website of the Year.'

Newquay Zoo received the Bronze award for the ‘Large Visitor Attraction of the Year', Trevornick Holiday Park won the Bronze award for the ‘Holiday, Caravan and Camping Park of the Year' and Fistral Spa won the Bronze award for the ‘Leisure Experience of the Year.'

The awards ceremony hosted by comedienne Ruby Wax was attended by nearly 300 other hoteliers, publicans and restauranteurs.

CORNWALL named as Britain's favourite holiday destination.

TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel community, conducted a poll of more than 500 British travellers to find out what they thought were the best and worst of Britain's coastal resorts, lakes, mountains and cities - and Cornwall came out as the clear winner.

Shopmobility launched!

Go! Newquay, the shopmobility service for Newquay was launched summer 2008. It is a scheme which provides motorised wheelchairs and/or scooters for those with mobility problems to enable them to visit the town and maintain a degree of independence. There are up to 6 scooters available for hire on a day or half-day basis with the cost varying between £5-10. Scooters need to be pre-booked at the Tourist Information Centre.

Preparations for Newquay Christmas Festival underway 

Make a date in your diaries for Newquay's Christmas Festival which will be taking place between December 19th-21st along Fore St in the centre of town. By all accounts it is shaping up to be a real Christmas cracker with a real ale element, music from up and coming Cornish bands as well as jazz gigs, cookery demonstrations from leading regional chefs and carol singing. Don't forget entry this year is FREE for all.

Newquay Discovery Trail website set for launch

Some of you may have seen or read about the Newquay Discovery Trail map? If you haven't, the Discovery Trail map is a free map available at a variety of outlets across Newquay. You can follow one of two trails, the Hetty or the Ada and discover the discs dotted around the town that unlock the secrets of Newquay's fascinating history. Well, the Discovery Trail team have been working hard on developing a website to accompany the map with a launch planned for January 2009 so watch this space!

Beatles Magical Mystery Tour hits Newquay again!

Did you know that Newquay was one of the central locations during the making of the famous Beatles Magical Mystery Tour film? They filmed on location around the Huer's Hut above the harbour, Watergate Bay and Porth while staying for 3 nights at the Atlantic Hotel. 2008 saw the 40th anniversary of the movie's release and with that, the launch of a commemorative documentary about the making of the film. So if you're a Beatle fan check it out!
