Quality in Tourism
Inspections in Scotland, England and Wales are carried by Quality in Tourism, created as a result of harmonising standards from the National Tourist Boards for England, Scotland and Wales, but also with the cooperation of the AA and formerly the RAC. Most of the schemes recognise increasing levels of quality using 1 - 5 stars. Some schemes further recognise excellence with the use of Silver and Gold awards. The following descriptions of what to expect apply to all types of accommodation. Use them as a general guide to what you can expect.
1 star: Simple, practical, no frills.
2 star: Well presented and well run.
3 star: Good level of quality and comfort.
4 star: Excellent standard throughout.
5 star: Exceptional with a degree of luxury.

Hotels (1-5 stars) - includes the categories Hotel, Country House Hotel, Small Hotel, Town House Hotel, Metro Hotel. 1 star: All rooms ensuite or private.2 star: Dinner usually available every evening.3 star: All rooms ensuite. Room service also available. 4 star: 24-hour room service and 50% of rooms have a bath and a shower. 5 star: A number of permanent suites and enhanced services eg concierge, full afternoon tea
Guest Accommodation (1-5 stars) - includes the categories Guest Accommodation, Bed & Breakfast, Guest House, Farmhouse, Inn, Restaurant with Rooms (no star rating). 1 star: Simple, practical, no frills. 2 star: Well presented and well run. 3 star: All rooms will have a washbasin. 4 star: A minimum of 50% of the rooms will be ensuite or have a private bathroom. 5 star: The highest standards of quality and service with a feeling of luxury. Hostels (1-5 stars) - includes the categories Hostel, Group Hostel, Activity Accommodation, Bunkhouse (no star rating), Camping Barn (no star rating). 1 star: Simple, practical, no frills. 2 star: Well presented and well run. 3 star: Single sex dormitories with some family rooms. 4 star: Ensuite rooms may be available. 5 star: Choice of dormitories, family rooms or ensuite rooms.
Self Catering (1-5 stars) - includes the categories Self Catering, Serviced Apartments, Approved Caravan Holiday Home. 1 star: A microwave is provided. 2 star: All beds full size. 3 star: Bed linen available. 4 star: Linen provided and towels available. Access to a freezer and washing machine. 5 star: The highest standards of quality and attention to detail.
Holiday Parks (1-5 stars) - includes the categories Holiday Park, Touring Park, Camping Park. Parks are assessed on the standard they provide to visitors in all aspects: facilities, cleanliness, service, pitches, groundsmanship, play areas and leisure facilities where provided. 1 star: Simple, practical, no frills. 2 star: Well presented and well run. 3 star: Good level of quality and comfort. 4 star: Excellent standard throughout. 5 star: Exceptional with a degree of luxury.
