The Inspiration
Produced by Slapdash Studio and painted by Elle Koziupa, this mural draws inspiration from Newquay’s historic fishing industry. Elle, was inspired by photographs from the Newquay Museum and Archive and wanted to create something that reflects the town’s deep historical ties to its fishing trade.
The Artist
Elle Koziupa is a versatile artist whose work spans multiple disciplines, blending classical influences with contemporary street art. Elle describes her art as having a “Renaissance-inspired aesthetic”. Her visual compositions, deeply rooted in the techniques of Renaissance masters, evoke the rich chiaroscuro lighting seen in the old masters.
The Process
To design the mural, Slapdash Studio staged a photoshoot at the old Fly Cellars, dressing the scene with period props to achieve authenticity.
Elle then used this image as a reference point throughout the painting process, where she employed a mix of spray paint and hand painting to bring her vision to life.
The Finished Mural
Elle has covered an entire house end wall on Sydney Road with a stunning depiction of a fisherman tying nets by candlelight, reminiscent of the ‘old masters’. She hopes it will spark a dialogue between art and the community.
Elle’s attention to dramatic contrasts between light and shadow creates an intense, almost cinematic atmosphere in her pieces.
It defies the typical expectations of street art.
The Producer: Jack Tierney from Slapdash Studio
“Elle’s murals, often painted on urban structures, bring history and classical artistry into modern contexts, inviting viewers to engage in a conversation that bridges the old and the new. It was a fun process from start to finish, and we’re thrilled with the outcome and the conversations sparked. The feedback has been fantastic!”
