Top 10 Reasons to Visit Crantock this Summer!
Crantock is one of Cornwall’s hidden gems. Situated down winding Cornish lanes, is a picturesque little village and has an expanse of golden sands stretching down to crystal clear sea. Here are our top 10 reasons you should visit Crantock, if you need persuading!
1. The Sea
From sandcastle-building to bodyboarding, sunbathing to paddle-boarding, it’s one of Cornwall’s most spectacular beaches. Between the Pentire headlands and backed by sand dunes, The Bowgie overlooks the bay with one of the country’s most breathtaking beer garden views of the Atlantic ocean, rolling swell and Goose Rock.
2. The Beach
The beach is vast, dog friendly, lifeguarded between July and September, and accommodates for all. The pristine sand offers plenty of space for beach games and sun bathing, and is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of neighbouring Newquay. Be sure to read the RNLI tide and sea safety signs situated in The Bowgie’s car park.
3. The Coastal Walks
You can wander the gorgeous South West Coast Path to secluded Polly Joke, or even further to Holywell and Perranporth. In the opposite direction, you can reach Newquay town, which will seem a world away from quaint, quite Crantock village. The South West Coast Path wraps the entire Cornish coast line completely uninterrupted, so is perfect for a hike, amble or coastal run, and the path is just a stroll from The Bowgie.
4. Eating at The Bowgie
As a recent winner of a Taste of the West Silver Award, if you haven’t eaten at The Bowgie, you’re missing out. The pink pub prides itself on supporting and serving as much Cornish produce as possible, prepared by great chefs in a wholesome and family environment. On weekends and in the school holidays, food is served non-stop from 11am through until last orders at 9pm ish. The Bowgie has Sunday roast covered; a selection of meats, gallons of gravy, fluffy Yorkshire puds, crispy roast potatoes and a selection of veg, you’ll be wishing you had room for seconds.
5. Drinking at the Bowgie
The Bowgie is proud to serve the finest Cornish ales, beers, wines, gins and rums the region has to offer. Alongside this local collection, they also stock beverages from all corners of the world! Whether it’s a coffee by the roaring fire or an ice cold beer on the sun terrace, The Bowgie has it covered. Anyone for Pimms on the decking!?
6. The Cave Carvings
The incredible cave carvings can be found within the cliffs at Crantock beach. They are of a woman and her horse, etched into the rock by her lonely lover. The tale tells of a beautiful woman who was riding her horse along Crantock Beach when the tide came in and washed them both away. Her sweetheart was left behind, wandering the beach in the hope she would come back. He used to wait in the cave, where he felt her presence was strongest. Alas, she never returned, but the cave carvings are a constant reminder of his love for her. A fascinating story!
7. The Wildlife
Seals can be seen bobbing around the headlands and the cliffs are home to many different varieties of birds and wildlife. If you’re really lucky, sometimes you’ll be able to spot pods of dolphins swimming off the headland of Pentire!
8. The Gannel
The River Gannel can be enjoyed in so many ways. At low tide you can walk, cycle or horse ride from Newquay to Crantock, and when the tide is high you can paddle-board or kayak down this gorgeous tidal river. Many wading birds and fish call this place home and can be spotted from the walking paths and the water. Just make sure you’re aware of the changing currents and tides.
9. Whatever The Weather
Crantock can be enjoyed rain or shine. When the skies are grey and a storm is brewing, this beach provides the most dramatic scenery. Watching the rain pour from the warmth of the pub couldn’t be cosier. But when the sun makes an appearance, the whole bay lights up; the sand glows golden and the sea couldn’t appear more inviting. The Bowgie’s spectacular setting has to be seen to be believed!
10. Sunrises and Sunsets
Crantock showcases the most stunning sunsets in the world. The colours are unrivalled, throwing stunning pinks and ambers across the bay, and they can be enjoyed over and over again from The Bowgie.
Without question, Crantock is a gem in Cornwall’s crown and there is no better place to soak up the gorgeous sights and sounds of the Cornish coast than The Bowgie beer garden, which enjoys one of the most incredible views in the country. Whether you fancy a locally brewed, ice cold beer on a summers day or a legendary Sunday roast from their Taste of the West Silver Award winning restaurant, The Bowgie Inn is the perfect place to enjoy all that Crantock has to offer. Despite being just a few miles from Newquay, you’ll feel a world away!
