Lappa Valley's 50th Anniversary
4th January 2024
One of Cornwall’s most popular family attractions is celebrating its 50th birthday in 2024 – with a series of celebrations and some exciting new developments.
Lappa Valley, near St Newlyn East on the outskirts of Newquay is the only attraction in Cornwall that transports families on an exciting train ride from the car park into a secret world of traditional fun and family activities.
Opened in 1974 by Eric Booth Lappa Valley was built on a section of the old Newquay to Chacewater Branchline along with the historic mine workings of East Wheal Rose. Eric’s passion was to create a place for children to play safely and families to create memories together.
Lappa Valley was bought by current owners Keith and Sara Southwell in 2014, who continue to share in Eric’s vision and are passionate in retaining the charm of the attraction; “Generations of families have so many fond memories of Lappa Valley and it really is such a special place to so many.” says Keith. “We love welcoming people who came to Lappa Valley when they were young - and as parents are now making memories with their own children.”
Recent developments have included a brand new soft play and restaurant, new outdoor play areas and an accessible adventure golf course.
“When we first arrived, I remember watching a family which included a child in a wheelchair, who was resigned to watching on as their siblings were running around and having fun. This really upset me, that’s why making Lappa Valley as inclusive as possible means so much to us.” Keith continued.
“This includes a changing places toilet, improved access around the site and a significant increase in the number of wheelchair-friendly carriages. The team also work closely with families who have children with autistic spectrum disorders and sensory issues.”
Plans have been afoot for Lappa Valley’s 50th birthday for a while, including the arrival of their first brand new mainline train for fifty years. In 2024, Lappa will also unveil a new frisbee-golf course, a new station for the Newlyn Downs Branch line, more undercover picnic areas and additional improvements to the outdoor play areas.
Keith added: “Lappa Valley is about families having fun. Whether you’re a train buff or not, we have something for everyone and we feel privileged to be in a position to help families make special memories fifty years on. We look forward to welcoming you in our golden year.”
Lappa Valley will be hosting a series of 50th birthday celebrations and events throughout 2024.
