To celebrate the huge coastal street art mural that adorns the side of SeaSpace, the man behind the brush, local contemporary artist, creative ambassador and all-around community legend, Phil Strugnell is hosting an Artist in Residence at SeaSpace during the Be Newquay Festival, over the weekend of 8th – 10th November.
Phil Strugnell, a passionate advocate for the arts, is a resident of Porth and the Head of Art at a local secondary school. His love for the area is evident in his striking artwork on SeaSpace. During his residency weekend, he will lead a series of creative workshops, allowing the local community and guests to share in his creativity.
Overnight stays are available from £100 per night, during Phil’s residency and the workshops below are included in the room rate.

Versions by Phil Strugnell at SeaSpace, from 7pm
To launch his residency, Phil will unveil his exhibition “Versions” with music from “The Analogue Cabin Radio Show DJs” and drinks from Harbour Brewing Co.
Saturday 9th November 2024
Abstract Wood Sculpture and Card Relief Workshop at SeaSpace, 10am – 1pm

Guests and the local community are invited to collaborate on creating a large wooden mural in the sunken play area.
Led by Phil, you will be invited to use spray paint and stencils to decorate and embellish large abstract wooden shapes pre-prepared by the artist. The shapes in the wooden mural will echo the shapes and colour palette used within the large mural.
Guest will also create their own small sculptural reliefs using cardboard, spray paint, stencils, posca pens, etc. Which they can then take home.
The workshop will conclude in the bringing together of the wooden shapes to create one large dynamic sculptural relief that will stay in site.

Abstract Collage Workshop at Project 83, 12noon – 3pm

SeaSpace guest and the local community are invited to join Phil at Project 83 in Newquay town centre to create their own individual abstract collage inspired by typography, abstraction and street art, which will culminate in the works being presented at Project 83 throughout Be Newquay Festival.

Phil Strugnell Artist in Residence at SeaSpace is forming part of the Be Newquay Festival - a new season of events, activities and workshops that celebrate Newquay’s culture and creative spirit.
